Private Investigator Dani Ripper works her way through a bevy of nuthouse clients while trying to maintain her delicate personal relationship with Sophie Alexander. Dani desperately wants a life-changing case. But what she gets is a killer case.

Abbey Rayne is a hilarious novel with an edgy, dark side that will piss you off even as you’re laughing.

PRELIMINARY COMMENTS FOR ABBEY RAYNE

“I defy anyone to read this book and think it was written by a man.”

“With the possible exception of Emmett Love, Dani Ripper is Locke’s most complete character. I know her and love her and will undoubtedly catch myself searching the crowds for her next time I’m in Nashville.”

“Abbey Rayne is a crazy, silly, funny, delightful romp! I laughed out loud many times—even though the subject matter is serious.”

“With Abbey Rayne, Locke has fired a warning shot at colleges, fraternities and The System. Despite the almost nonstop humor, this novel offers a powerful message.”

“Dani cracks me up! Her relationships with Sophie and Dillon are spot-on and hilarious. While the entire novel is great, Dani’s new game, Countdown, is worth the price of the book all by itself. I guarantee people will be playing it in restaurants all across the country!”

I really liked this Dani Ripper novel and races through it to the end. But there are a few things that keep me from rating it higher than three stars: 1) the relationship between Dani and Sophie is still off. Dani's character has a female personality except for when she's with Sophie, then the characterization becomes unmistakably masculine, which is just weird. It was better in this book than previous books, but still, there's a jarring disconnect that I wish Mr. Locke could fix. 2) I hate the ending. It's becoming a theme in more and more John Locke books, where he's got to throw in one last wrench before the book ends, and it leaves me with a negative impression to take away from the story. I've been a huge fan of all the various series and own every book he has published (except the non-fiction), but they are becoming so predictable that it may be time to walk away from this author. Or better yet, it may be time for him to move to a brand new series. All that said, in reference to this novel, I think fans of his will enjoy it for the most part.

Abbey Rayne Dani Ripper Book 5 edition by John Locke Literature Fiction eBooks Reviews

I loved the other 4 books in the series, but this one just didn't match the balance of serious subject matter and comedy. I especially didn't like that Dani disappeared for at least a third of the book. I understand that campus rape is an issue, but the book felt more like a thesis than a Dani Ripper novel. Hope the next one is better!
I have read all of John Locke's books (the fiction writer, not the one from history).

I have always thought his books rated five stars. However this one didn't do it for me.

The premise in the sub plot was right on and deserves to be written in loud words. But it didn't fit. Dani is a case and has always been fun to read, up until now.

Sorry, but that is my take on this book. I will look forward to more from this author.
I am certainly glad that Dani is not my friend. She seems to twist logic to find any opportunity to throw a friend under the bus. Dani has some strange moral code that she applies to all but herself. She rationalizes every thing she does, illegal or immoral, but holds all others to a very strict standard. I am having a hard time finishing this book as I am rooting for the "villain" and hoping, hoping, hoping that Dani fails. I've enjoyed the Donovan Creed and Emmet Love adventures, but this will probably be my last Dani Ripper. I just can't make myself like the main character.
If you have not discovered John Locke-yet! You are in for so many adventures! Abbey Rayne is no exception. This particular offering takes on a very sensitive subject somewhat disguised by the twists and turns and suspense of the story line, and, the amazing Dani Ripper! What a piece of work she is. The beginning pages of this book made me laugh so hard because the text was so true!! I am constantly amazed at where John Locke comes up with some of the dialogue and descriptions of things he mentions in his writing. Some of them are a little graphic but stunning at the same time and hilarious. There is a whole collection of great characters offered in this authors writings you don't want to miss. Donovan Creed, Emmett Love along with Dani Ripper and her friends. Treat yourself and have fun!
I remember from my misspent youth in central Ohio (Go Bucks!) a shoe commercial that went something like "Half the fun of having feet is Red Goose Shoes." To me the fun of your books is the clever turn of phrases throughout. I usually smile a lot as I read and some times actually laugh out loud. (You can always tell a person of substantial intelligence and sophistication. His opinions will be substantially the same as your own.) At the same time (for me) the endings tend to be a little thin.

If you have read the other four Dani Ripper novels, Abby Rayne starts out slow. It picks up in Part 2 with the frat rapes, seemingly sick/ popular in university fraternities around the country. John Locke open a fruitless dialogue regarding this perverse sexual rape crime at universities, where the rape victim is treated as the guilty party. However, Abbey is very cleaver confronting parents of the rapists and pocketing a nifty $350,000. When Dani Ripper becomes involved, the reader thinks Abbey's blackmail game will backfire, but on the contrary, Abbey continues her fun, only this time for much higher stakes. If the courts can't back up the women who are raped, Abbey will get in her licks and maybe other rape victims will follow Abbey's lead. A satisfying conclusion.
Let me start by saying I'm a real John !ocke fan. I've read all of the Donovan Creed and Emiry Love books and basically everything else written by Locke. This book however, was, without any doubt, the worst I have read. I barely made it to the murder. The dialogue between Dani and Sophie and Dani and...."well, everyone else" was absolutely tortuous. No human with an IQ of 90 or above could be as stupid as this book portrays Dani.
The conversations between Dani and Sophie made me want to reach into the book and slap Dani. Sophie would never leave home if she were as insecure as portrayed. Even 19 year old Dillon couldn't out up with this in real life .

John Locke has let his fascination with this "unusual" life style completely overtake the plot and the dialogue in this book. I've stopped reading two books in the past two years and I read daily. This one was number two. Life is too precious and fleeting to waste time on this pitiful attempt at entertainment. I'll still read Locje's book. He's a great writer but no more Dani please.
