Funny, but not as satirical as Waugh's contemporaneous Vile Bodies. Powell's bright young things show a chill shadow of sadness missing in Waugh. Anthony Powell once described F. Scott Fitzgerald as that rarest of creatures a bad writer who went on to become a good one. Powell's trajectory, which begins here, is that of a pretty good writer who became very, very good.
Afternoon Men is a short, amusing read. You will enjoy it, and it'll be over before you know it, and it won't make you regret the opportunity you missed to read a More Important Book. It's a one-night stand that goes well in bed and where no complications follow. It's briskly paced, and the dialog is snappy, and some of the descriptions are so deadpan funny you laugh before you know what you're laughing at.
"When he went to see Lola, Gwen Pound, of whom Undershaft had once said she looked the sort of boy who might win a scholarship in chemistry, opened the door." That's a howler, unless you're of a certain priggish, heresy-hunting temperament, in which case, you reflect fleetingly on what an offensive thing to say, and the omniscient Powell hears your finger-wagging thoughts from his plush divan in heaven, and laughs even louder at the satire of you that is now playing out, with excusable cruelty, in his head.
Afternoon Men belongs to that class of English social satire that survives on its comic value alone long after the author's enterprise has ceased to command any sympathy at all. (Lucky Jim is like that too). Because the Lost Generation context is now truly lost to us, it's hard to care at all about, or attribute any real significance to, disaffected, serially drunk, emotionally detached young people. The same dynamic holds for The Sun Also Rises, a far more self-important book. In fact, if The Sun Also Rises had been written by someone with a snappy wit and a healthy sense of his own ridiculousness, it'd have been very much like Afternoon Men.
Not nearly as good as critics contend.
I was looking for an early book by Anthony Powell, a writer I find fascinating, in order to get a feel for the author's development and this book answered that need
Somewhat of a disappointment. One recent published article praised it as a comic masterpiece. I found considerably less gold. Some clever witty lines but no tour de force.
Good first book by a major author.
Elegant British subtle humor. Very accessible and a joy to read. Anyone who has ever read later Powell works should enjoy this, as would anyone looking for an introduction to him.
Good read. Anthony Powell's first novel, liked it enough that I'm now reading his later opus "A Dance to the Music of Time". It's a slim volume, but rich in characters. The writing, especially when compared to his later works, shows the potential of the young writer who got much better.
